[The last few days, Maurice spent training preparing for a few important matches. Cornerstone Revolution will be the two biggest nights of his young career; he has an opportunity to defeat a wrestler he has dominated; yet failed to capture a victory from, and the opportunity to become the DCWL Grand Champion. Before he could focus completely on his training, Maurice had to make a few more hires. He was finally able to decide on an agent and management team.]
[Maurice decided to hire “Westfund Inc.” as his Agency; he would be working closely with Jessica Donald who will be directly responsible for Maurice’s “interests.” The deal takes a lot of pressure off of Maurice, as he won’t have to handle his every booking. His decision for manager was a unique one; instead of hiring just one person, Maurice thought it would be more helpful to hire two from different ends of the spectrum.]
[He first brought in Lauren Jenkins, the 20 year old that is taking online courses at UCLA that uses a very high tech approach to the sport. She uses charts, graphs, and simulations to help prepare her clients on a technical level. She highly pushes the use of film and breaking it done using fancy computer programming. Maurice is her first client; Maurice seemed very excited to work with the young brunette from Carson City, Nevada.]
[His other hire would be “Brilliant” Jerry Horne, a 52 year old manager who spent between the ages of 16-44 actively wrestling around Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri areas. He was born in David City, Nebraska. Throughout his career he was known as a brilliant tag team wrestler that had some decent single success in the middle of his career. From the age of 42 Horne began managing, he definitely uses as old school approach of staying away from weights, learning the ends and outs of the ring, out thinking your opponent, and making strategic changes on the fly. Horne is looked at as the top manager in the Midwest region, and has been looking to branch out for some time.]
[Both Lauren and Jerry agreed to the dual position with Maurice. Horne will work extensively with Maurice in the ring, while teaching him about the ins and outs of proper ring position, proper technique, and how to pace himself. While Maurice will look to Lauren on how to diet, weight training, and extensive background research into his opponents. Lauren is an Exercise Physiology and Sports Marketing Major.]
[This decision leads us up to today, Maurice, Jerry, and Lauren are holding a press conference inside the US Airways Center press room in Phoenix, which is being picked up by all of the local stations due to Maurice’s cross popularity with the non wrestling community. Maurice sits between his new managing team while dressed in a black suit with a white dress and black tie. Lauren has her hair up, while wearing a white summer dress with black patterns. Horne wears the same attire as Maurice, except for a red tie. Around twenty five press members have shown up for the meeting. A few security guards stand behind the three. Horne leans in towards his microphone.]
Horne: As most of you probably know by now, Ms. Jenkins and I will be managing all of Maurice’s wrestling affairs for the foreseeable future. My name is Jerry Horne, with an –e at the end. Maurice has prepared a few statements regarding recent events in the DCWL. [Turning towards Lauren] Do you have anything, Ms. Jenkins?
Jenkins: Only that it will be a pleasure to help Maurice reach his full potential, and that we will take a few questions after his statement…
[Maurice leans forward, clearing his throat.]
Thompson: I would like to start off with the comments made by Leon Corella…
[Maurice adjusts himself in his seat; a few flash bulbs go off. His face remains neutral.]
Thompson: I realize that I am only eighteen and have a lot to learn. But, there are a few things that I have learned from not only my time in wrestling, but from being a human being. A person does not threaten the well being of another, especially when that person has ample time to prepare. I thought Leon and I had come to an agreement, but it seems he feels that he has the power to dictate everything before, during, and after our match on day one at Cornerstone Revolution…
[Maurice smirks.]
Thompson: If he had those powers, he would have known to not have taken me so lightly during our first encounter…
[Some laughter comes from the reporters as Maurice pauses, shrugging confidently.]
Thompson: Hey…it’s true. The point is I dare Leon to attempt to do anything to put my well being in danger in any fashion at any point. If he feels that I am simply going to sit back, that he has all of the power, or his life quickly going down the tubes will give him some advantage…
[Maurice pauses, emphatically placing his index finger on the table.]
Thompson: He’s painfully wrong. This isn’t meant as a warning to Leon, just a simple caution to rethink his life and the direction it’s going….
[Maurice looks down at the set of papers in front of him, sliding the top sheet to the side, he resumes.]
Thompson: Now, I would like to break my silence in regards to American Freebear. I’ll start off by saying, I have no respect for someone who complains his way into a title shot, and somehow manages the biggest upset I’ve seen since I’ve been involved with the DCWL…Well…Expect for maybe when I pinned Denis Cyr. I still hurt from some of those suplexes…
[Maurice playful grabs at his back and grimaces. More snickers are heard from the reporters. Both Lauren and Jerry crack smiles as well.]
Thompson: That being said, his little “Hibachi” joke was..well…”cute” I’m surprised someone with the IQ of 12 could come up with such a well played joke.
[The sarcasm is easily detected in voice as he shakes his head.]
Thompson: Every time he opens his mouth this thought runs through my head that I feel is worth sharing. I know someone else has had to have the same question. But, doesn’t he remind you of a mentally challenged John Wayne that screams a lot?
[More laughter from the reporters, Jerry cups a fist over his mouth attempting to hide the laughter. Maurice turns towards Lauren.]
Thompson: Doesn’t it?
Jenkins: I’m too young…I never watched any John Wayne movies..
[She shrugs as Maurice looks shocked.]
Thompson: Maybe, he’s just that popular in North Dakota…Anyway; there actually is a point to this other than to take shots at a man who more resembles a toddler…
[Maurice keeps a straight face as a few more snickers are heard.]
Thompson: Freebear, I have a little challenge for you. Personally, I’m quite tired of every high profile match of mine being 2 out 3 falls. It causes everyone to relax, lose focus, and just takes away from the environment. My challenge to you is, agree to make this match 1 fall..lets put the pressure on both of us. I want the best wrestler to win this match, 1 mistake may change the outcome, 1 change of momentum, 1 shot at glory… That’s my challenge to you Freebear.
[Thompson leans back.]
Horne: We’ll now take a few questions…
[Commotion is heard from the reporters, Horne nods towards someone.]
Male Reporter: How have you been preparing for your match against Freebear? With your other commitments, has there been enough time to train?
[Lauren leans forward.]
Jenkins: I’ll field that…For the past couple of days I’ve been working with Maurice on a training regiment, diet, and supplement plan that will have him in peak condition for both his Grand Championship match against Freebear and his match against Corella. There will be sufficient time for him to prepare for Cornerstone Revolution….
Horne: And you best believe that I’m going to go over some things with him in the ring to prepare him mentally…We aren’t going into this match with any excuses. If Maurice loses, it won’t be for lack of preparation.
Thompson: With my new staff in place, I have a lot more time to focus on training and not having to carry two careers at once.
[More commotion is heard, Horne points at someone.]
Male Reporter: Is there any chance that having two different voices feeding you advice will cause setbacks in your career?
[Maurice grins.]
Thompson: Absolutely not, all three of us sat down and discussed how we are going to approach the situation. It will work out for the better, I’ve already learned a great deal about training from Lauren and Jerry has made sure I understand how much work will have to be put in to become great in the ring….
Horne: I give him credit, he actually listens. That’s rare for his generation…
Jenkins: Hey, I resent that…
[Laughter from the crowd as Lauren looks over at Jerry playfully.]
Horne: You know it’s true; I have a daughter your age she never listens.
Jenkins: Girls like to have fun Jerry.
Horne: That’s the problem…
[More snickers as Maurice nods towards someone.]
Female Reporter: I have a few questions…Do you feel you are taking Freebear lightly? Is Leon Corella’s state of mind a concern to you, and did you think your career would progress so quickly?
Thompson: I guess a quick answer would be…”No.”
[Maurice pauses for a moment and shrugs with a playful look on his face.]
Thompson: Really…That’s my answer.
[The group of reporters laughs once more.]
Maurice: In all seriousness, I’m definitely not taking Freebear lightly. He did beat Corella, which is something I failed to do. There may be some controversy around how, but he did win. I know he “Can” defeat me; I’m just going to do everything to keep that from happening. About Corella, his state of mind doesn’t bother me. He doesn’t want to go down that road with me, I have faith that he will gather himself before we reach a cross roads.
[He pauses for a moment.]
Thompson: Your last question was about my career?
Female Reporter: Yes…Did you feel it would progress so quickly?
Thompson: Absolutely not, look how far I’ve come in less than a year and 23 matches into my career. It’s surprising, but I try and keep a level head. There’s a lot I need to improve on to become even a decent wrestler, much less a great one. I’ve tried to surround myself with great people, from Navarro, Cold Blood, Unique Element, Julia Norwich..and from being around Lauren and Jerry I have all the right positive influences to help me improve…
Horne: That’s all the time we have, we’ll try to meet with the press again shortly…
